Male vs Female Eclectus - Our experience.
The Eclectus is arguably the world's third best speaking parrot. The male is green and the female is red. Opinions on the difference between the boys and girls personalities vary. It really depends on your lifestyle. It is our experience that the girls talk as much as the boys.
We absolutely adore the girls! Girls can be more work, generally they like to test you more, whereas the boys tend to be more tolerant. But individual boys can also have this tendency to test you like the girls. Like people Eclectus have their moody don't touch me days, I usually hold them and snuggle them more as long as I can see that they are not resentful. Some members of my family choose to give the birds their space. All of the birds have different personalities, I find the girls more cuddly and the boys more independent, some will let you touch them all over and some are just happy to sit with you, some boys will let you cuddle them and some will take more time to warm up to cuddles, some are happy to have their wings touched and others don't. The boys are off marching around and exploring while the girls watch what's going on. All of the good things like cuddles, and kisses and wing touching are things that take time and training, regardless of gender.
Eclectus are a shy bird and can feel scared in new environments or if someone or something new is introduced to them suddenly. They will either withdraw and remain still or may nip, approach them slowly without any sudden movements. On the whole boys seem to be more passive but there are exceptions in both genders. If you have the time to spend with a girl then the rewards are wonderful. All these obstacles can be overcome with quiet patience, introducing new things to them slowly and spending time with your bird to love and socialise them. A bird does not learn to socialise when they spend most of their days in their cage, to have a well adjusted social bird they have to be socialised by their family through flight and play with family members.
Establishing a loving friendship with your bird where they feel safe is a matter of getting to know them and spending time with them, if you are prepared to do this then either a male or female could work for you. When looking to adopt we will advise you on all of our available babies and their personalities and will match them to you as best we can.
