Toilet Training
We have not actively toilet-trained our babies.
Baby Eclectus tend to go to the toilet every twenty minutes. When they are due to go to the toilet, pop them where they are allowed to poop, Whaterver you choose to do make sure that it is something that will ALWAYS be available to them, if not it could cause many health hazards. By toilet training your parrot you are teaching them when it is, and is not appropriate to poo. So where do we need to be careful? Some people choose to train their bird to poo in their cage, this can cause problems. If you ever choose to take your bird out camping, or for a walk you are not going to have their normal cage with you, therefore they will try to hold on as long as they can, this is not healthy.
So our recommendation is that you train them to go to the toilet on something versatile like newspaper. You can lay a piece out in every room, you can take it anywhere with you and it is easy to scrunch up and place in the bin.
When they do go, say "good poop" or "go potty" or any other toilet term you would like them to learn (this is called bridging, also give them a small treat).
We have found that as our birds age they naturally gravitate to their cage or their large perch in the living room to go to the toilet They only poo in those places. Babies poo everywhere. The older birds even hang on when we go out in the car.
